The Fairfax Ensemble grew out of a lecture-recital given in Middlethorpe Hall, York, in the summer of 2006 given by Amanda Crawley (soprano)and Josephine Peach (piano) in collaboration with York Civic Trust’s splendid Georgian Fairfax House. With flautist Edwina Smith they prepared programmes celebrating Mozart’s 250th anniversary. They published their first CD on Mozart and his contemporaries in 2007. Their succes led to the development of new programmes at a wide range of venues and they enjoy everything from mid-Baroque music to works written this year, otherwise specialising in late 19th and British 20th century music.
Jo was invited to work with The Sounds Lyrical Project in 2012 and gradually all three performers were drawn in to the work of these poets and composers. From October this year their five regular recitals are all programmed around the work of the Sounds Lyrical composers with several completely new pieces centered around poems from the in-house poets with some others. The members of The Fairfax Ensemble play and teach widely throughout Yorkshire and beyond, constantly adding to their repertoire.
